Luke O'GEIL

Human performance has fascinated Luke for as long as he can remember. Witnessing the ease with which athletes execute complex skills has led to an eternal obsession with unlocking the mystery of movement across multiple domains.

Though Luke's own gymnastics training was limited, he dedicated over a decade to becoming an exceptional gymnastics coach, working with numerous elite competitive teams at Calgary Gymnastics Centre (CGC).

As his passion for gymnastics expanded, Luke yearned to capture images that reflected athletes' embodied experiences. The same extreme attention to detail that led to his athletic and coaching success has now resulted in Luke being heralded as Alberta's most celebrated gymnastics photographer.

  • one Grizzly Classic "Just. That. Proud." t-shirt that must be worn at all times during event coverage sessions; and

  • an exclusive grizzly classic Paid opportunity.

How much floor time will i get?

EACH MASTERS OF MOTION student is guaranteed to receive two event coverage sessions:

  • one with a lower- to mid-level group of provincial athletes, ranging from P1 to P3.

   and

  • one with a higher-level group of provincial athletes, ranging from P3 to national open.

Luke O'geil will select up to 6 top students to participate in additional event coverage sessions with senior athletes, ranging from Junior to senior. He will make this selection based on:

  • compliance with safety standards;

  • compliance with floor etiquette;

  • DEMONSTRATED SITUATIONAL AWARENESS; and

  • the quality of captures, looking specifically for both technical and aesthetic excellence.

We highly encourage students to view the grizzly classic 2024 session schedule to familiarize yourself with the competition flow. session durations differ slightly, depending on the number of REGISTERED athletes. Due to these variations, we cannot guarantee a set floor time.

However, each student will receive at least two opportunities to shoot athletes on each piece of equipment (known in gymnastics as an "event"), these being:

  • High bar;

  • parallel bars (P-bars);

  • rings;

  • pommel;

  • floor; and

  • vault.

WHAT GEAR AND EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED?

Photography Equipment

  • Camera body (or bodies if students have more than one). Students will be shooting fast-action sports here, so the body should be capable of 10fps of continuous shooting, AT LEAST. If students have full frame, great! However, this is not necessary. Shutter speed is more important;

  • extra batteries for camera body;

  • Camera body CHARGER and adapters, if necessary;

  • Lenses. Luke recommends a 70-200mm IDEALLY WITH AN F2.8 APERTURE, as this lens is commonly used for fast-action sports photography. An f4 will also work as the lighting at the competition venue, genesis Place, is decent. Please note, however that the lighting in the practice venue is more challenging. If you have fast primes (eg. 135mm, 85mm, or 50mm) those are all fantastic too.

  • Memory cards. Students should have at least one 64gb card, however 128gb is recommended.

  • SSD External Hard Drive. Students should ensure they have an SSD external drive to deposit files  in between sessions. Luke recommends a 1tb drive for file storage and suggests traveling with two for redundancy, in order to backup files. Please note, however, that The second is optional.

  • Computer. A laptop is absolutely essential for module 3, however Students will also be reviewing files frequently throughout modules 1 and 2. At a minimum, bring a laptop, but also consider bringing anything else needed for the go editing, such as a mouse and power.

  • Camera bag. photographers must be highly mobile and able to access their gear frequently in order to keep pace with the competition. As such, a functional camera bag that can be comfortably carried onto the floor is mandatory. Students will have a place to store additional belongings and equipment throughout the competition.

Other gear & Considerations

  • Note-taking apparatus. It is highly recommended that students bring an apparatus to assist with note-taking if they do not feel comfortable capturing notes on their laptop.

  • Comfortable, Discrete clothing. STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO WEAR THE PROVIDED GRIZZLY CLASSIC SHIRT WHILE ON THE FLOOR IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS WILL BE EASILY IDENTIFIABLE. laundry service for grizzly classic shirts will be provided daily. in order to avoid disrupting the event, distracting the athletes, or attracting otherwise undue attention, students must ensure that all other clothing is discrete. Please also ensure that clothing is comfortable, as event photography sessions are long and require significant movement.

  • Indoor shoes. In order to ensure the continued cleanliness of competition and training floors, students must bring a clean pair of indoor-only shoes.

  • Water Bottle. It is strongly recommended that students bring a reusable water bottle in order to remain hydrated throughout the day.

  • Nourishment. It is strongly recommended that students bring adequate food in order to maintain focus and energy. Please note that food will not be provided, so please ensure that your clinic budget includes a per diem for food expenses.

What if I don't have my own gear?

First, welcome to the wonderful world of photography! We're delighted that you're considering trying it out and we look forward to helping you navigate this exciting field.

Calgary is home to two nationally renowned Professional Photography shops that offer a suite of camera and lens rentals.

GEAR Recommendations
You'll need to rent both a camera body and a lens for the clinic. luke recommends a 70-200 mm lens with a f2.8 aperture or faster (smaller number). Luke recommends a mirrorless camera body. His top recommendations are the Sony a9 or the Canon R5/R6 (the R5 just has more MPs). here's a breakdown of other brands:

  • Canon – R5 or R6 (both are great)

  • Nikon – Z8 would be best as it is the only one with 20fps shutter speed. Z6 would be second in line (maxes out at 12fps).

  • Sony a9 (first pick, dedicated sport camera), or a7 IV (descent all around camera)

  • Skip Panasonic and Fujifilm

TIMING
We recommend picking up the camera on the evening of Tuesday, March 19th or the morning of wednesday, March 20th to make it to the start of the clinic on time.

If you are flying in from out-of-town, are from the gymnastics community, and cannot make the first instructional day, we will be offering a makeup session on the morning of Thursday, March 20th. In this case, we recommend picking up your gear as early as possible on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning by 9 am.

RENTAL Programs

The camera store, which is Luke's go-to supplier, is offering Masters of Motion students 20% off rentals. rental fees vary by item, so we recommend checking out the full rental catalogue on the camera store website. please email rental@thecamerastore.com or call 403-234-9935 to reserve your gear. And be sure to mention that you're with masters of motion.

Vistek also rents camera bodies and gear. Again, rental fees vary by item, so we recommend checking out the full rental catalogue on vistek's website. Please call the calgary store at 403-244-0333 to make your reservation. Vistek offers 20% to students with valid student id.

If you have any questions or need support arranging rental gear, please email info@thegrizzlyclassic.com with "Attn: Lauren Killam, masters of motion rental support" in the subject line.

WILL I NEED AN ADOBE LIGHTROOM SUBSCRIPTION?

students are required to have access to POST-PROCESSING SOFTWARE, so that they will be able to manage and develop their files. Luke works with adobe's photography plan, which includes both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. He strongly recommends these software programs, as they are used by most professional photographers.

However, if students prefer or have access to other post-processing software, that is fine. please note that luke may not be familiar with other post-processing software and cannot guarantee that students using other software will be able to achieve the same results.

HOW WILL THE PAID OPPORTUNITY WORK?

following the event, each masters of motion student will have the opportunity to submit their final photo exhibitions to the grizzly classic shop gallery.

the gallery, once active, will be promoted to the families of all 347 athletes who attend the event, so that they can purchase all the images from their athlete's session for a flat rate of $125 cad.

Masters of Motion Students will receive 60% of the revenue generated from their exhibitions, up to a maximum total payment amount of $2500, which is greater than the masters of motion photography clinic fee.

Oh, And, we'll increase the max payout if the clinic doesn't sell out. So, if you choose to cover four sessions, instead of your guaranteed two, your maximum payout will be bumped to $5000 CAD; and if you cover six sessions, your maximum payout will be $7500; And so on.

monthly Payments will be distributed via wise bank transfer by the 15th day of the subsequent month.

Estimated Value

Each student will have the opportunity to shoot a combined total of at least 14 athletes in their two grizzly classic event coverage sessions. If all 14 athletes purchase gallery access, 60% of this revenue will amount to $1050.

will i Get a chance to shoot fig athletes?

The international gymnastics federation (FIG) maintains rigorous requirements for media professionals. As such, masters of motion students will not be permitted to shoot any athletes competing in international, fig-sanctioned competition sessions THIS YEAR.

However, the grizzly classic will be expanding its international competition component in future years and will invite masters of motion graduates to apply to provide INTERNATIONAL-level photography coverage for the 2025 GRIZZLY CLASSIC. and, before you ask, yes this will be an opportunity that we will only offer to masters of motion Graduates. sorry cbc! sorry global tv!

It is suggested that 2024 masters of motion students continue to develop their skills, portfolio, and cv with gymnastics and other sport photography opportunities throughout the year.

Please join the grizzly classic newsletter list in order to be notified when FIG media coverage applications open.

LUKE
O'GEIL

It's not good enough to simply point and shoot or allow ourselves to be seduced by the high-flying action around us. Successful gymnastics photographers must apply careful consideration and foresight to their work so that their images will reflect the embodied experience of each athlete.

Additionally, this objective requires that we be fully present to witness and immortalize the fleeting high-speed, high-emotion moments that occur almost continuously during competition.

We must look deeper and remain conscious of the incredible process that these athletes have dedicated their lives to. Truly, this is the only way to convey the intricate nuances of emotion, intensity, and beauty that is inherent in every performance. I feel honoured by the opportunity to share this art with you.
